He does not reproduce faces, but creates expressions, or more exactly, characters. Torments, spasms, convulsions, happiness or pain, light and dark, hope and despair are personified. Most of the images painted by Bratfanof, with an almost photographical rigor, illustrate a real model. But it is a reality seized through deforming lenses. (Corneliu Antim, Luceafarul, February 1986)
He is the author of compositions, in the most extended meaning of the word, but this does not however supposes he paints large canvases. He also is the only Romanian artist who exclusively paints characters and portraits, as instruments of the composition.
