Coţovanu, schiţă de portret, Flacăra Iaşului, Călin Ciobotari : “Şi ca om, şi ca artist, are un soi de completitudine, de împlinire amplă, care însă nu concide cu o închidere atotsuficientă. Spirit altruist, de o generozitate dezinteresată, Coţovanu este, dincolo de calităţile sale de mare artist, un mare umanist. Şi tocmai de pe poziţiile acestui umanism pentru el lucrurile sunt foarte clare în ce priveşte marile întrebări ale filosofiei: cine suntem?, ce facem aici?, încotro ne îndreptăm paşii acestei existenţe? Autodidact, l-a citit pe Platon, pe Kant, s-a iniţiat în filosofia budistă, a traversat scrierile unor mistici, după cum n-a rămas nici indiferent la puterea de seducţie a unor gânditori români. Cu ce a rămas din toate astea? Cu o filosofie a simplităţii şi a bunului simţ cu o credintă de fier în Adevărul majusculat, cu certitudinea că lucrurile sunt cum sunt pentru că aşa trebuie să fie. –26 iulie 2007.

When you travel and visit the worlds’ museums, when stepping inside the artists’ studios becomes a habit and when you find yourself aesthetically drawn and with a specific interest for understanding the artistic phenomena regardless of how varied they are, an imaginary museum incessantly enriched is being shaped in your memory. Essentially, you create a selection, a chronological order, a scale of artistic values that you’ve encountered.When seeing the work of a painter, you get the habit of including it in the history’s shelters between the styles and the artists, in
order to define, briefly and simple, its value, originality and uniqueness. We take this imaginary exercise of defining the artistic individuality and
personality as a use pattern for approaching the work of the painter Mihai Coţovanu.
